Many flights emanating out of Tulsa Airport were cancelled or delayed earlier this week, due to a major drugs bust occurring at the American airport. A flight technician who was undertaking routine maintenance on an American Airlines plane found over thirty pounds of Cocaine bricks hidden in the electronics bay near to the nose of the plane. The plane was reported to be a Being 747.
The plane had taken off from the Colombian capital Bogota and it then landed at Miami International Airport in Miami, Florida. In Miami the plane had been flagged for maintenance duties and the plane was re-routed to Tulsa, Oklahoma were the maintenance work would be undertaken.
The website of the Los Angeles CW affiliate ktla 5 had more information on the astonishing drugs seizure.
The technician at the airline’s maintenance base in Tulsa was working on the plane and noticed some of the insulation looked new. He moved the insulation, saw one of the bricks and called the Sheriff’s Office.
According to the airline, authorities were immediately contacted.
The total weight was roughly 26 pounds with an additional 4 pounds of packing material, officials told KOKI. The drugs have a street value of at least $200,000, the Sheriff’s Office said.
American Airlines has launched an investigation, and the Sheriff’s Office has handed the case to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
